It was all a showcase of either national and/or international competition and pride. Yet nearly all you would have see there would have been ephemeral by design, set to have been mostly torn down after the big showcase was all over. That's part of what made it fascinating to visit these events: Just having known that fact. I would guess that the Columbian Exposition had more structures/buildings meant to remain as permanent structures than any other event of these type - at least here in America.
