Chicago – The Windy City

Chicago, Illinois, founded in the early 1800′s, was (and still is) a transportation center that joined the East Coast and the rapidly growing West. Adjoining Lake Michigan, the building of suburbia and skyscrapers was slow but steady. A devastating fire of 1871 nearly wiped out all of Chicago but it came back grew decade after decade. By the turn of the century, the population exceeded two million.

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. Only New York City and Los Angeles have a larger population. Chicago also ranks among the world’s leading industrial and transportation centers

Chicago is nicknamed the windy city for a variety of reasons, mostly based on folklore. One reason is that the Mayor of Chicago boasted so much about Chicago hosting the worlds fair, people referred to him as “windy.” Likewise, some claimed that the politicians in the Chicago are were full of hot air once again making the implication that Chicago was “windy.” The last, and most likely, reason is that the editor of a newspaper was trying to promote Chicago as a summer resort and used Lake Michigan’s summer breeze as a selling point. From personal experience, I can honestly say that the wind coming off lake Michigan is both strong – and cold – especially during the winter-time.

Chicago is renowned for its art museums, great food, and great music. If you like sports, Chicago has the legendary Bulls (basketball), Bears(football), and Cubs(baseball), which are world famous.

Chicago is a great place to visit. Make sure to check it out, if you get the chance.
